Norway is flat!
All over Scotland someone has been graffti'ng the back of road signs and rock faces saying "the earth is flat"...... Well, its actually true......we woke got on the go, turned one corner and discovered Norway is flat too. At least it is in the south west corner between Egursund and Stavanger. This area called Jaeren is a bit like the east coast of Scotland around Berwick and Dunbar, pretty flat and productive farmland of both arable and pastoral types. It was quite a contrast to the area we had passed through yesterday.
The weather had improved and the sun was back out. We followed the 44 north westwards towards Stavanger, its a nice easy drive and follows the Jaeren National Scenic route. This bit of coastline has many miles of beaches, we went for a walk along the superb yellow sands at Ogna. The sand was strange as it was never firm, from the back of the beach right to the waters edge wherever you walked you sank in an inch or 2. It also had weird, steep sided shelves in places, formed by the waves obviously but not something I have ever seen on a beach before. The wind was blowing and it wasn't a day for building castles and besides it was almost lunch time, so after walking along the beach we returned via the firmer paths along the marram grass dunes.
After lunch we continued up to Stavanger, we passed close by the very busy airport and quite a few planes flew in providing a spectacle for the boys, the approach at a low level right over the road. We also filled with diesel, we didn't need a huge amount but rumour has it that its cheaper on a Sunday and at 138.9 Kroner it was much cheaper than anything else we had seen so far in Norway and this equates roughly to £1.25 British money so not too bad really. It had been much cheaper in Denmark however.
We chose the Mosvangen campsite on the edge of Mosvatnet lake, about 2km from the city centre and got sorted out on our pitch before having tea and a wander around the loch before the boys bedtime. The lakes quite nice but missing something-like a palace!! It is however the place to be seen jogging around in all your flash big brand label clothing. Arcteryx, Norrona and Patagucci seem to be the labels to be seen in around these oil rich shores, lol.
Patagucci... Ah can see Kenny gettin excited already....
ReplyDeleteI ignored that derogatory remark toward the worlds finest label for the sake of our planet we all should be wearing that brand
DeleteAye buddy I would fit in there with my norona jacket and breeks, it is a big oil town though the Norwegians no how to look after their offshore workers and we are all jealous of the north seas Norwegian sector workers, lots of my colleagues have been to Stavanger and my nephew Richard Karen an Allan's boy is over there regular for work from Aberdeen
